An afternoon tea with a difference. We didn’t have a massive lunch when we arrived in York earlier on today, opting for some tasty pate/meat/cheese at the York Tap (owned by The Tapped Brew Co just like Pavement Vaults).
As we were a bit hungry, we decided we needed some refreshment and a snack. Usually we would go somewhere for tea and cake, but I’d been doing plenty of research on places to eat and drink in York, so we opted for beer and chips instead. I see no problem with this as an alternative to afternoon tea 🙂
Much like the York Tap, there are plenty of beers on offer here, and my first choice was very easy, Excuser from Abbeydale Brewery, a favourite brewery of mine from Sheffield.
Excuser is a lovely hoppy pale ale, with excellent hoppiness for such a low ABV. A great session ale.
Mrs MOFAD was keeping it Brouwerij Huyghe with Floris Ninkeberry, a beer full of tropical fruits, but without the hoppiness that usually accompanies them (which I love). We were both fans of this one.
Time for those chips next, BBQ spiced skinny fries with mayo. These were just what we needed, a nice snack to go with the beer, a perfect accompaniment.
I was quite thirsty, so had some more beer, The Preacher from O Brother Brewing in County Wicklow. A very tasty session IPA, hoppy but well balanced. Perfect on a sunny Friday afternoon.
Pavement Vaults is a lovely place. A great selection of beers, knowledgeable staff and a nice atmosphere. If our bowl of chips was anything to go by, the food is good too. There’s a good selection of burgers on the menu, along with some “not beef” burgers, a flat iron steak, smoked ribs and some pizzas too. It was high on my list of eating places so we might be back.
And if only we’d been here a few days later, we could have had some Thornbridge Mango Halcyon, which will be “on tour” here in a couple of days. Luckily, it will be coming to the Needle & Pin so we will get to try it a bit later…
Pavement Vaults is definitely recommended if you’re looking for somewhere to eat and drink in the centre of York.
