New Inn, Clapham, Yorkshire

A moist May Day. Light showers and periods of cloud. Not conducive to long walks or high walks. So we parked up in the village of Clapham (not the one in London with the Junction), and headed up to Ingleborough caves for a bit of underground exploration. We spent around an hour looking around underground, with a joking Lancastrian as our Yorkshire cave tour guide. Can’t get into stand up comedy? Become a tour guide. Although, any guided tour of caves always leads to quoting this League of Gentlemen sketch:-

We wandered a bit further up the hillside, to Trow Gill, and then turned back down to the village to forage for some lunch. So often you get to a village pub at ten past two on a Sunday afternoon only to find that they have stopped serving lunch, or there’s just a carvery on with some tired looking vegetables.

The New Inn is not one of those pubs though. They serve their lunch menu and sandwich menu until 6pm, alongside a couple of full roasts. A roaring log fire, a friendly welcome and a selection of spaces to dine in, make this a very inviting pub on a soggy Sunday afternoon.

We sat in the main bar area and ordered some sandwiches and drinks, warming up and drying out all the time. The New Inn are good enough to warn you that your sandwiches will be served on slates with chips and salad (aka leaves).

Given that the Tour de Yorkshire has just passed through the area, a pint of Yorkshire Flyer from Settle Brewery was in order, a tasty bitter golden ale which was nicely balanced.

Shortly afterwards, our sandwiches arrived – breaded cod loin for me (super posh fish finger sandwich) and crayfish, smoked salmon and prawn for Mrs MOFAD. Both served with seasoned chips and a nicely dressed little salad. Just a shame there were no plates 🙂

A very tasty pair of sandwiches, and a perfect lunch on this dreary day. Lots of tasty desserts were tempting (including our favourite English Lakes ice cream) but we passed on these and headed out to explore the village a little more.

A lovely village pub, MOFAD approved!
