The Railway Inn, Swadlincote

Another quiz night. As you’ll know if you’ve been reading these posts during the year, we do like a quiz night. “My Pointless Friend Richard” have triumphed several times this year, featuring various guest team members.

Tonight, we find ourselves in the recently reopened Railway Inn, Swadlincote, which has recently been taken over by Ian and Jay Bird, who used to manage the Navigation Inn, in Overseal, and the Railway Tavern, in Hatton. They’ve redesigned the garden, put in new signage and furniture, and a new kitchen, serving traditional family meals, home made pies and curries, Sunday lunches, and breakfast every day.

The quiz night was a Geocaching affair, so we found ourselves pitted against some friends and fellow cachers. But first, the small matter of some dinner. Plenty of good pub grub on the menu, and I can’t resist a good burger, and that’s exactly what was on offer here. Classic and simple, with very tasty chunky chips, and a very simple old school salad on the side.

The only let down was the lack of a decent local ale. With the Tollgate brewery just around the corner, I hope that’s something that can be easily rectified so that I don’t need to have a soft drink next time 🙂

As for the quiz, it was another victory for “My Pointless Friend Richard”, showing off their tiny trophies below…
