Pub of the month, January 2015 – Britannia Inn, Elterwater

One of the quietest months for Pub of the Month. A trip to the Lakes at the turn of the year saw the only 2 trips out – we had a fair bit of home improvement work lined up for the rest of the month (the lounge needed redecorating after 15 years!)

The runner up this month is Lucy4, part of the Lucy’s empire in Ambleside. Lucy’s main restaurant is a very informal affair, and Lucy4 carries on that informal concept with a more tapas style of menu, featuring things like proper tortillas, figs & dolcelatte, lemon & olive roast potatoes or chargrilled balsamic chicken. Like their neighbour, they also serve a few bottled local ales, including the Coniston classic Old Man Ale.

The winner is a classic walker’s pub in Elterwater, the Britannia Inn. I’ve lost count of the number of times that we’ve been here, it’s a regular winter walking stop as it is perfectly placed on many walks in the area. We’ve even sat outside having soup and chips on more than one sunny January lunchtime.

A lovely pub which is so welcoming to walkers, we stopped here on a walk with our friends Pik & Deb and their two boys, after walking over from nearby Neaum Crag, where we stayed many years ago. A lovely lunch and a cracking pint of Britannia Gold from Eden Brewery.
